General Traffic News

In Greater Belfast traffic has now eased. 

  • South Belfast - lane restiction in place on the Ormeau Road citybound before Donegall Pass - cones will not be lifted this evening - delays can be expected at times
  • A lane restriction is now in place on Oxford Street to facilitate essential carriageway re-surfacing from 19.00 Fri 20th April to 06 00hrs Monday 23rd April - delays currently on Donegall Quay (The Big Fish) & Queens Bridge / Bridge End

Belfast City Centre - BRT Resurfacing April 2018

Belfast City Centre  - in connection with Belfast Rapid Transit project essential carriageway re-surfacing will be carried out on the following routes: 

  • A lane restriction will be in place on Oxford Street to facilitate essential carriageway re-surfacing from 19.00 Fri 20th April to 06 00hrs Monday 23rd April

A20 Upper Newtownards Rd Countrybound Closure Sun 22 April

East Belfast - the A20 Upper Newtownards Road will be closed this Sunday 22 April from 05:30 am to 17:30 pm

Closure is countrybound between the Greenwood Avenue / Upper Newtownards Road Junction and the Junction of Knock Road / Upper Newtownards Road to allow for full lane reinstatement for NI Water 

A Diversion route will be in place using 

Upper Newtownards Road - Working area between Knock Road Junction and Greenwood Avenue. Country bound traffic lanes closed to all through traffic, diverion via Holywood Road/ Belmont Road to Hawthornden Way. City Bound traffic maintained with one lane open.

Toome Bypass Full Closure Sunday - 22 April 6am - 6pm

This Sunday - 22 April - Toome Bypass will be closed in both directions from Brecart Roundabout to Drumderg Roundabout between 06:00 and 18:00.

  • East Bound Diversion via Brecart Roundabout, Roguery Rd, Portglenone Rd, M22 J2
  • Westbound Diversion via Drumderg Roundabout, Toome Main Street

This closure is to facilitate the installation of the new footbridge over the A6 at Drumderg roundabout.

West Belfast - BRT Road Closures April - Stewartstown Road

West Belfast - in connection with Belfast Rapid Transit project essential carriageway re-surfacing on Stewartstown Road (from the Stewartstown Road/Upper Dunmurry Lane Roundabout to McKinstry Road Roundabout) will continue over the following weekends during April 2018 on the dates below:-

A6 Castledawson By-Pass Daily Lane Closure 16 - 27 April

Co Antrim - Castledawson - A6 Castledawson By-Pass from the U5129 Bellshill Road to C557 Hillhead Road will have Daily Lane Closures (09:30 - 16:00) in place from Monday 21st to Friday 27 April 2018. 

Traffic Control will be in Operation and delays can be expected.

A6 Castledawson By-Pass Overnight Lane Closure 21-29 April

Co Antrim - Castledawson - the A6 Hillhead Road from the B182 Deerpark Road to the C557 Hillhead Road will have Overnight Lane Closures in Place (22:00 - 06:00) each night from Saturday 21 to Sunday 29 April 2018. 

Traffic Control will be in place and road users in the area can expect delays of up to 15 minutes.

M22 Contraflow at A6 Moneynick Road to April 2018

Motorists are advised that a contraflow system is in place on the M22 joining the A6 Moneynick Road until April 2018.

This is a necessary part of the ongoing A6 dual carriageway upgrade works. Road users should expect delays and leave extra time for journeys.

Ballymena- A36 Church Rd Glenwherry Closed 12 March - 4 May

Co Antrim A36 Church Road, Glenwherry, Ballymena will be closed to traffic between Ballynulto Road & Douglas Road from Mon 12 March to Friday 4 May 2018 to allow essential structural maintenance at Lynn's Bridge.

A diversion for motorway traffic will be signposted via the A26 - Ballee Roundabout, A26 Lisnevenagh Rd, Dunsilly Roundabout, M2 Motorway, Exit Jct 5 onto A57 - A8 then follow permanent traffic signs for Larne & vice versa.

The diversion for non motorway traffic will be signposted via Dunsilly Roundabout, B518 Stiles Way, Greystone Roundabout, Ballycraigy Road, A6 Belfast Rd, Kilmakee Rbt, A6 Antrim Rd, A57 Ballyclare Rd - A8 then follow permanent traffic signs for Larne & vice versa.

This road is an important connection to and from the Port of Larne and road users should allow for delays and allow extra time if travelling to connect with a Ferry.

Belfast - Rapid Transit Scheme

Belfast Rapid Transit (BRT) is an innovative and ambitious project that will create a new and dynamic public transport system for Belfast. BRT will provide fast and reliable services connecting East and West Belfast, Titanic Quarter and key locations of economic and social activity in the city centre and along the BRT corridors.

Current work locations:

  • Falls Rd/Andersonstown Rd (Whiterock Rd to Finaghy Road North) – Off-peak lane closures expected until May 2018
  • Upper Newtownards Road (Knock Rd to Dunlady Rd) – Full time Lane closures expected until June 2018
  • Stewartstown Rd (Michael Ferguson Roundabout to McKinstry Rd) – Off-peak lane closures expected until June 2018
  • City Centre(Oxford St & East Bridge St)  - Off-peak lane closures expected until June 2018
  • BRT Halts – Short length, off-peak lane closures on all BRT routes to accommodate construction of new halts until June 2018

East Belfast - Comber Greenway - Cyclists & Pedestrians

Work on a £350,000 widening scheme for the Comber Greenway is scheduled to commence on 18 January 2018.

The scheme will widen the existing Greenway between Holywood Arches and East Link Road, enhancing the experience for walkers and cyclists on this popular route. 

The Department has carefully programmed the work to take place in phases with the first section stretching from Holywood Arches to Sandown Road.

Belfast Flood Alleviation Works - Upper N`ards & Knock Roads

The main junction between Upper Newtownards Road and Knock Road has been reopened, however some lane closures remain in place between Earlswood Road and Ormiston Drive. Further information can be found here.

New on iOS & Android - Belfast Metro Bus Tracker App

Department for Infrastructure and Translink have launched an App for real time bus information at all Metro bus stops called Belfast Bus Tracker.

The App gives immediate access to real time information about bus services across the Metro network in the Greater Belfast area.

Using the built-in GPS features of your smart phone to work out where you are, the App will provide real time, audio and visual public transport information whilst at the bus stop, at home, at work or on the move.

The App is available now to download for free from iOS and Android App Stores

The App features allow you to:

  • Save your favourite stops;
  • Follow your bus on its route to your stop;
  • Find bus stops by address or near your current location; and
  • Check current and future bus schedules.
