Belfast City Centre Streets - Castle St / Royal Avenue

Belfast - following the recent city centre fire at Bank Buildings a number of city centre streets remain closed in the area.

With the cordon around the affected area expected to stay in place for about four months, Belfast City Council has created a public information page on its website to update businesses and their customers. Click here

Belfast Ormeau Avenue - Sewer Upgrade

Work continues to improve the sewerage infrastructure in and around Ormeau Avenue, Dublin Road, Bruce Street, Sandy Row and sections of the lower Ormeau Road and the following locations :-

Bankmore Square/ Hardcastle Street – Pipeline installation work is continuing on Hardcastle Street, with access maintained to all businesses. A road closure is currently in place on Hardcastle Street between Bankmore Street and the NCP Car Park entrance until approximately mid-October. NCP Car Park remains open for business as usual and diversion signs are in place.

Alfred Street – works continuing, 2-way cycle lane is suspended, as well as temporary suspension of some on street parking bays 

Clarence Street / Adelaide Street – temporary 1-way cycle lane is in place en-route Out of City along Adelaide Street which requires a temporary suspension of parking bays along the route between Clarence Street and Ormeau Avenue.

The following works will commence during September:-

Ormeau Avenue – Pipeline installation works are due to commence on Monday 10th September around the junction of Alfred Street, and will progress towards Bedford Street. During this time, it will be necessary to suspend some of the parking bays along this section of Ormeau Avenue. Two- way traffic will be maintained with one lane remaining open in each direction, a contraflow system will be in operation during these works.

Charlotte Street Car Park – works are due to commence around Monday 10th September for 3-4 weeks within Charlotte Street Car Park, which will have a reduced number of car parking spaces available. 

Dublin Road – works are due to commence on Monday 24th September between Marcus Ward Street and Pakenham Street. During the works it will be necessary to suspend some of the parking bays and part of the taxi rank along this section of the street. Two lanes of traffic will be maintained on the Dublin Road during these works.

Traffic management signage and diversion routes will be in place as appropriate during these works.

M2 & Duncrue St - Left Turn Unavailable until 21st Oct

Belfast - leaving the M2 at J1 Duncrue Street the citybound off-slip lane into Duncrue Street is now coned off and a left turn movement is no longer available at this junction from Monday 6th August through to Sunday 23rd September 23:00 (Continuously) 

Road Users wishing to turn onto Duncrue Street Northbound will need to follow the signed diversion along:-

  • Duncrue Street > Whitla Street > Garmoyle Street > Dock Street >Nelson Street > Great Georges Street > York Street, >Dock Street > Nelson Street.

The left turn closure is required to facilitate roadworks associated with the M2 Busway upgrade.

Road users should allow extra time for their journeys.

Scheme to Extend M1 & M2 Bus Lanes Commences 6 August 2018

Work is due to commence on 6 August to extend the hard shoulder bus lanes along the M1 and M2 motorways.

The scheme will begin by upgrading the existing bus lanes. It will be necessary to suspend their use while this work is carried out but they should be operational again by the autumn. Work on the new sections of bus lanes will then continue and should be complete by December 2018.

Temporary traffic management arrangements are required to carry out the works safely. They will generally consist of localised hard shoulder closures and temporary 50mph speed restrictions.  Some road or lane closures will also be needed at off peak times during evenings/ overnight on weekdays, as well as during weekends and these will be signed in advance.

East Belfast - Barnetts Road - Closed until 30th September

East Belfast - Barnetts Road, will remain closed between Kings Road and Thornhill Parade until Sunday 30th September 2018 for footway and carriageway widening works.

  • Traffic will be diverted via Kings Road – Knock Road - Upper Newtownards Road and Kings Road – Old Dundonald Road – East Link Road –  Upper Newtownards Road.
