What is the map?

The interactive map shows relevant and up-to-date traffic information for Northern Ireland.

What do I need to use the map?

To use the map, you need to have JavaScript enabled in your web browser.

In Microsoft Internet Explorer, this can be enabled by clicking on Tools > Internet Options > Security tab > Custom Level then scrolling down to the 'Active Scripting' options and selecting the 'Enable' radio button, then clicking 'OK'.

In the latest versions of Mozilla Firefox and Microsoft Edge browsers, JavaScript is enabled by default. No action is required to enable this.

In Google Chrome, you can enable JavaScript by opening the top right-hand side menu (three vertically stacked dots) and clicking 'Settings', then 'Advanced' at the bottom of the page to show all settings. Under the 'Privacy and security' section, click 'Content Settings' and then 'JavaScript'. Ensure that the slider is set to the right, showing 'Allowed'.

In Safari, select 'Safari' from the menu bar and then select 'Preferences'. In the Preferences window, select the 'Security' tab and ensure the 'Enable JavaScript' checkbox is ticked.

How do I use the map?

The map is updated with relevant traffic and travel information. It is intended to be used by you so that you will be able to make informed travel decisions.

When using the map, pan and zoom to the area that is relevant to you.

Clicking or tapping on the Layer Selection dropdown situated at the top right-hand corner of the map allows you to choose which content to display on the map by ticking or unticking the relevant checkbox. The map will then be updated with the relevant information layer icons.

You can obtain further information by hovering over and clicking (or tapping on a mobile device) on these icons.

By default, the "Refresh Map Automatically" option is selected. With this enabled, the traffic information displayed on the map will automatically be refreshed every 5 minutes.

What do the map icons represent?

This icon represents Variable Message Signs (VMS), which are information signs to be found along motorways and at other locations. When using the map, if you hover over one of these icons (or tap the icon if using a mobile device), a message will be displayed showing what the VMS sign is currently displaying as well as the time that the VMS sign was most recently set.
This icon represents a CCTV camera. When using the map, if you hover over one of these icons (or tap the icon if using a mobile device), the latest image from the camera will be shown. By clicking on the icon (or tapping the icon if using a mobile device), you can access a link to view updating images or a live video feed (where available).
This set of icons represents a roadwork. The colour of the icon indicates the severity of the delays associated with the roadwork. When using the map, if you hover over this icon, the location, start time, end time and delay time arising from the roadworks will be displayed. If you click on the roadwork icon (or tap the icon if using a mobile device), you can view more details information such as the roadwork description and who is carrying out the roadworks.
This icon on the map represents an incident. When using the map, hovering over the incident icon will present you with the incident title and location. If you click on the icon (or tap the icon if using a mobile device), more detailed information including the incident description and the time that this information was last updated will be displayed.
This icon represents an event. When using the map, hovering over the event icon will present you with details about the event such as name and location. If you click on the icon (or tap the icon if using a mobile device), more detailed information including description and the time this information was last updated will be displayed.
This icon represents a journey time between two junctions. When using the map, hovering over the journey time icon (or tapping the icon if using a mobile device) will present you with details of the journey time between two locations.
This icon represents traffic speeds along major routes. When the "Current Speeds" checkbox is ticked, the speed of traffic will be displayed at fixed locations indicated by this icon. Hovering over the icon will display the road name, average speed value and last updated date for those locations.
This icon on the map indicates the location of a low bridge. When using the map, hovering over the low bridge icon (or tapping it if using a mobile device) will display the details including the maximum clearance height, road number and structure reference.
This icon on the map indicates the location of a weight restriction. When using the map, hovering over the weight restriction icon (or tapping it if using a mobile device) will display the weight limit, road number and structure number.

What are the mouse controls for the map?

When using the map, clicking and dragging with the left mouse button allows you to pan the map in any direction.

If your mouse has a scroll wheel, you can use this when navigating the map. By placing your mouse cursor over the map then pressing and holding down the Ctrl key and scrolling up and down, the map will zoom in and out respectively.

Double clicking on the map with your left mouse button will zoom the map in another level.

Moving the mouse cursor over an icon will cause a pop-up box to be displayed showing basic information for that icon. By clicking on the icon with the left mouse button more detailed information will be displayed.

What are the mobile controls for the map?

When using the map, tapping and dragging with two fingers allows you to pan the map in any direction.

Pinching two figures on the map and moving the fingers together or apart will zoom in and out respectively.

Double tapping on the map will zoom in another level.

Tapping an icon on the map will cause a pop-up box to be displayed showing detailed information for that icon.

How do I change the map area?

You can click or tap the dropdown in the top right hand corner of the map to select one of several main areas on the map.

Once an area is selected, the map will automatically pan and zoom to that area. If you have enabled cookies for the site, your selection will be remembered the next time you visit the site.
